Nail Dehydration or Overhydration:

Both dehydration and overhydration can contribute to nail breakage. During dry seasons, failure to moisturize can lead to dry, brittle nails. Conversely, constant exposure to moisture, especially from chores, can cause nails to become soft and prone to breakage. Particularly, exposure to chemicals or strong cleaning agents can damage nails, causing them to peel and chip.

Vitamin B Deficiency:

Vitamin B, particularly B7, is crucial for nail and hair health. Providing adequate vitamin B to the body daily helps strengthen nails, reducing the likelihood of brittle and shedding nails.The most noticeable signs of vitamin B deficiency are often seen in nails with white spots or ridges. The simplest way to care for brittle nails is to supplement vitamin B through foods such as beef, sweet potatoes, whole grains, or through additional supplements.

Age and Other Health Issues:

As people age, nails and hair tend to grow slower, and nails become thicker, drier, and more brittle. Meanwhile, fingernails become thinner and more prone to breakage compared to younger individuals. This is considered a natural progression that everyone experiences. Maintaining a balanced diet and regular exercise can slow down the aging process and keep nails healthy for longer.

The reasons for brittle nails sometimes stem from internal health issues. Raynaud’s syndrome, for instance, can lead to poor blood supply to the hands and feet, making nails more fragile. Additionally, low thyroid hormone or hypothyroidism can result in drier skin and nails.
